Lot 4
New arrival at Dodlands......
It's always a pleasure to receive a new horse to train.
This week owner-breeder Bill Aitchison (of The Houxty sisters fame) sent
along another filly out of his broodmare Izon's Croft, who was herself
placed in a couple of Point-to-Points.
'Bella'
is by Black Sam Bellamy (click on the name to find out more) and is a
half sister to a couple of horses currently in training here at Dodlands
in the hurdles-placed duo Bonny Houxty and
Maid Of Houxty.
Bella had been in pre-training prior to joining us so she has been straight onto the morning gallop rota (see report above).
She has a similar sturdy conformation look as her sisters so it could well be that she'll be suited to a trip in time. After all, further back in her family can be found those grand Northern staying chasers from a while back, Red Marauder (Grand National) and Red Striker (Peter Marsh Chase).
Young Joanna is back from the Sales......
After spending 5 years working in racing stables in Ireland, Joanna Walton recently returned to the Borders. Not that she didn't enjoy her time across the Irish Sea, quite the reverse, but the lure of home was always there.
'Miss J Walton' rode a winner on the Flat in this country prior to her Irish relocation where she was successful a couple of more times on the level plus another three under the NH code. Add to that 16 winners under the NH banner in the UK, the most recent being Lissen To The Lady for Sandy Forster in May at Kelso, and it's clear Joanna is a very accomplished jockey.
She has been a friend of Georgina (Shiels) for a number of years so we
gladly welcomed the offer to come along to the Wednesday "work" mornings
this season.
But this young lady has more strings to her bow. In a move that made our
Assistant Trainer green with envy, Joanna attended the 5-day Tattersalls
Ireland NH Foal Sale in early August principally working for a
bloodstock agent. But she didn't come away empty handed herself having
purchased a well-grown, athletic colt by Workforce which she will
nurture over the next couple of years to then make a re-appearance at an
NH Sales ring.
And finally - more Sales fall-out......
Oh, and while we're on the subject of Sales and
non-attendance..............
The annual Tatts Ireland
August NH Store Sale has been off the radar for the usual Dodlands enclave since the pandemic struck but this did not prevent
Callum from engaging in his thorough analysis of the catalogues and
forming a short-list of likely sorts.
For
there, in a 2020 catalogue (held in August albeit under the banner of Derby Sale) was a Jet Away gelding
- including a striking photo on-line, reproduced below - out of
that fine broodmare Rose Vic, the dam of Dodlands' stalwarts Paper
Roses, Paper Promise & the unraced 5yr old 'Emily'
who were all bought at Tatts Ireland sales. A family
well known hereabouts, you might say.
The then 3-yr old Jet Away gelding was led out unsold at €14k - a good deal less than the €20+k estimate given by our Assistant Trainer.
Nevermind, there's always 2022.
But hold that result.
For that
very same Jet Away gelding (now named Everyonesgame) finished a
head
runner-up on debut in a good quality 4yr-old Irish Point at the start of November.
He was subsequently sold at the Tatts Cheltenham Sale last week for
£85k.........
This one's for you Callum
