Eden Mill runs at Newcastle on Thursday
Onto Newcastle (good ground) on Thursday with
Eden Mill (Craig Nichol) who
lines up in the final race on the card at 4.30, a Class 5 2m 1f handicap
hurdle (0-105). He acquitted himself in a reasonable fashion when runner
up at Ayr over 2 miles on 9th January on heavy ground, although never a
danger to the easy winner.
Eden Mill may be rated only OR77 but he has always worked well with the
string each morning - certainly far in excess of that current mark - so
a tongue tie will be fitted to aid his breathing.
Our web team can be self-indulgent in these race previews and as well
as our own views on our runners, an attempt is made to assess the race
as a whole, more often than not highlighting the main protagonists.
But this 2 mile event contains a bit of a blot in the handicap in the
form of Tom Lacey's Ivetwiggedit. Ridden by today's jockey Cameron Iles,
this combination easily won a 2 mile handicap hurdle on good ground at
Doncaster last week - off a rating of OR77. That win came after a year
off, and a change of stable, in a Conditional Jockeys event, hence he
can reappear in the next week or so unpenalised before his new handicap
mark (OR89) kicks in.
So 12lb well in, plus young Cameron can claim another 2lb in this race.
Now, there is always the prospect of the dreaded bounce factor taking
effect.............
Like Eden Mill, there are several others who'll be looking to put in a brave show but if the form of Ivetwiggedit is upheld, the race will be for second place.
Anyway, the hope is that Eden Mill will appreciate the sounder surface and continue his improvement this season.
Good luck to Craig, and the lads from TD9 Racing.
