Jimmy's Jet wins at Ayr, Monday
Racecourse debutant Jimmy's Jet won the bumper at Ayr on Monday in impressive style for owners Jimmy Fyffe & Rob Bewley, and was well ridden by Rob's son Callum.
This victory was treated with a mixture of exhilaration and relief for those watching on from afar back at Dodlands. Relief certainly, as this was the first winner that the yard has sent out in 2021, with the second half of last season being one to forget. The quality of the horses was never in doubt but performances from horses that did make it to the racecourse were impacted by a bout of ringworm in the yard, and as a consequence below par.
These things can happen but following the summer break, The Trainer has been heard to declare that he's never been happier with the health of the string and Jimmy's Jet's breathtaking performance at Ayr was so uplifting.
Anyway, onto the story of the race which we're only to happy to
re-live.
From the tape, Callum positioned the gelding close up on the outside
of a couple of hard pulling opponents, travelling well. This was
the order until Jimmy's Jet eased into the lead on the bottom bend
just over 5 furlongs out and soon put daylight between himself and his
rivals.
A challenge from eventual second Jack Of All Shades at the 2 furlong
marker was swiftly put to bed as Jimmy's Jet quickened in the style of a
very good horse to pull further clear, which allowed Callum to ease the
gelding close home.
Jimmy's Jet is a very nice gelding, of huge potential and as he has demonstrated here, a possessor of a several gears of acceleration.
Rob of course has had several horses at Dodlands Steading over the
last couple of seasons but this was prolific winning owner Jimmy Fyffe's
first runner for us. For both though, it was their first winner for the
yard.
Congratulations, it's a real pleasure.
Shoeshine Boy is steadily getting there
Mousetrap Racing's well related 5 year old gelding Shoeshine Boy had his second race of the season at Kelso on Saturday in the 2 mile novice hurdle.
Rather than have him rushed off his feet early on, the plan was to drop
the gelding in. So, Craig (Nichol) employed waiting tactics in rear but this tact
was completely nullified when the favourite (and never headed winner)
Corrigeen Rock pinched several lengths at the start and made all. This
left about half the field well off the pace and in the circumstances we
felt Shoeshine Boy did okay in making a little headway from the last
into 7th place.
Unable to trouble the leaders though.
The gelding will be suited by further and should he receive a handicap mark this will effectively eliminate the upper level of horses against whom he's competing at present.
