Fine run from Honda Fifty - runner up on debut at Newcastle

This was a 'newcomers' NH Flat race - none of the 11 runners had run before, even in a Point - so it may be hard to gauge the level of the form of the race. However the winner, Hammond/Lee's Crypto, was well fancied and set a strong gallop from the off, pulling away in the final 2 furlongs to win by 16 lengths. He seems an above average type and the time of the race was almost 13 seconds faster than the handicap hurdle run earlier over the same distance.

Not bad for a bunch of inexperienced, unraced youngsters.

We knew beforehand that Honda Fifty wasn't slow but being a son of the miler Arakan, it would be the final 4 furlongs that represented a step into the unknown. He was quite green early on, so Callum settled the gelding off the pace and raced wide of the others to keep clear of any bunching.
Honda Fifty made good headway turning for home, and rousted along held every chance 2 furlongs out. But the winner pulled out more and stayed on strongly. Honda Fifty kept on well though to take the runner up slot, just piping Kirby's filly Desaray Girl who was receiving 15lb in age and sex allowances.

The remainder of the field finished well strung out, so the form of the race has a solid enough look about it. Time will tell but there were some expensive purchases taking part, so all in all we're delighted with Honda Fifty, another of our inexpensive (€1,400) purchases from the annual Tatts (Ire) August Store Sale.

Next runners?

There is quite a lot of Northern racing in the next 2-3 weeks, and thankfully a fair deal of rain around.
The Boo Box and Eternally Yours are both entered at Ayr on Saturday, and their participation is dependent upon mid-week work.

Hit by one of the vagaries of the handicapping system, Eternally Yours was raised 2lb to a rating of 127 yesterday.
Er.....this has been achieved by standing in her box for 2 months while frost, flu-gate and vaccinations were accommodated.......
Huh, that's a good deal? As Smith or was it Jones used to say a few decades ago.
