The family

Bred by owner-breeder Allan Gilchrist and the 5th progeny from Youandi to come to Donald. Mia Matriarch is a half sister to the stable’s 5-time winner Harry Flashman and her half brothers, bumper placed Robbie Dye, Sam Patch and Hawaii Klass, have been in training at Dodlands.
Youandi is a full sister to winning hurdler Linngate who produced Linn’s Heir (a triple bumper winner for Len Lungo.). Linn’s Heir is the dam of Lancashire Oaks winner Turbo Linn, Grade 2 winning hurdler Ignotus and bumper winner & winning hurdler Bishop’s Heir.
Her owner/breeder will have her as a fine broodmare in time. However before then, we hope she will have the ability to win a race or 2 during her racing career.

About the sire

The grey Silver Patriarch was proving such a success as a stallion under both codes, that his passing in 2009 was such a bitter disappointment.
As a racehorse, he was a classic winning top class runner trained by John Dunlop winning 8 of his 24 races from 2 to 4 years. These wins included 3 Group 1s, and a second place in the Derby to Benny the Dip.
At stud, he was proven to be equally successful - siring the winners of over 40 races on the flat, and over 100 in the NH sphere (and still counting).
His best known sons are Lucinda Russell's 2010 Blue Square Gold Cup hero Silver by Nature, and Grade 2 winning hurdler Rimsky, Listed flat winner Party Boss and My Arch.

Form Summary

Mia Matriarch actually came into training with us at Dodlands in the spring of 2009 and settled in nicely, enjoying striding out on the gallops, working upside her stable companions.

However, it was not until the spring of 2011 that the mare was prepared for her debut in a bumper at nearby Kelso. Ridden by Wilson Renwick, Mia Matriarch seemed to be coming to challenge at the furlong post only to meet with interferance. Showing a little greenness, she nevertheless stayed on again near the line to finish a close third. We were keen to give her another race, and she re-appeared a fortnight later at Perth in another bumper and, although well beaten in fourth, we feel she ran at least equally well.

Mia Matriarch was switched straight to novice hurdles in the autumn of 2011 and of her 6 runs over hurdles, by far her best came in a 2m 6f handicap hurdle at Newcastle in March when 3rd beaten just over 3 lengths.

Mia Matriarch is a nice mare, and can sometimes lose a bit of condition when in work. So, we're looking for her to have a good summer at grass, start to fill out her frame and progress in staying handicap hurdles during the course of the season.

18 February Carlisle : 2m 4f Mares Novice chase (Class 4) heavy. 4 ran. (W Renwick) - fell
Tracked leader till led 2nd, soon clear and going well till fell 5th.
Making her chase debut, her early, bold jumping was reminding us of her half brother Harry Flashman till - dashitall! - she overjumped and took a tumble at the 5th fence. As long as her confidence has not been dented, she looks to have a future in this sphere.

line

3 Jan 13 Ayr : 2m 4f hdcp hurdle (Class 5 0-100) OR 83 heavy 7 ran. (W Renwick) - pulled up
Held up in touch, good headway to track leaders after 3 out, weakened 2 out, behind when pulled up before last.
With stable mate King Kalium winning this event, we weren't displeased with this mare's performace here. She travelled nicely and jumped well before the testing conditions took their toll.

line

10 Nov 12 Kelso : 2m 2f Hdcp Hurdle (Class 5 0-100) OR 83, soft, 15 ran. (B Harding) - u.r.
Held up, stumbled and unseated rider 2nd
Another 'oh well that's racing' moment. Horse and jockey both fine.

line

29 May 12 Hexham : 3m Hdcp Hurdle (Class 5 0-95) OR 85, good to firm. 15 ran. (C Gillies) - 8th
Held up in midfield, steady headway and in touch after 2 out (usual 3 out), ridden and weakened before last
A bit better from the mare, off to grass now where we think she'll benefit and come back stronger.

line

16 May 12 Perth : 3m ½f Hdcp Hurdle (Class 4 0-115) OR 87 (oh 1)  good to soft. 12 ran. (P Buchanan) - 12th
Held up, effort and ridden 4 out, no impression and soon weakened.
She was first beaten and this is not her true form.
