The family
Lucarno Dancer is the 7th foal out of the tough Flat performer
Sing and Dance who won 6 races and was placed a further 30 times
(from 75 runs). He was trained throughout by the Weymes family,
first Ernie and then John.
She stayed particularly well, with 5 of those victories coming over
1m 4f.
Although Lucarno Dancer is the only progeny of Sing and Dance to taste success of the track, her half brother Easy Dancer won a Point-to-Point subsequent to placed efforts in bumpers and over hurdles and fences for Nigel Twiston-Davies.
The grand-dam Musical Princess won 4 times on the level has bred
another two winners in addition to Sing and Dance, the best of whom
was Drummer Hicks with 7 wins.
Further back in the family can be found the Zetland Gold Cup winner
Abercata, a half brother to Musical Princess.
About the sire
Lucarno (bay horse born 2004, died 2018) provided Jimmy Fortune with his sole British Classic triumph when landing the 2007 St Leger,
beating O'Brien's Mahler.
Homebred by owner by George Strawbridge and unraced at 2, he was trained by John Gosden
throughout his racing career with his main other victories coming in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York
and Newmarket’s Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes.
He was marketed mainly as a NH sire during his 9 seasons at 3 studs - Wood Farm and Shade Oak Stud in England with 2 seasons at Haras de Saint Voir sandwiched in between.
Lucarno's best progeny this far have been Listed hurdle winner Dame De Compagnie (trained by Nicky Henderson) and the 5-time winning hurdler/chaser Global Dream.
Lucarno Dancer is owned, and formerly trained, by Jedburgh based
Point-to-Point and Permit holder under Rules Raymond Shiels. Raymond
sent her along to Dodlands at the start of October '18, having won a
handicap hurdle at Hexham in November '17. She was also a runner up
at that course a few months earlier.
While she has been competing at a fairly modest level, these two
runs at Hexham (she won on soft) over 2 miles represent encouraging
form as she starts the 2018-19 season of a BHA rating of 81. This
compares favourably with Racing Post Ratings of 87 & 89 of her two
Hexham runs.
But to switch the clock back a few years, Lucarno Dancer started her racing career with Scobie Jardine for whom she raced three times (2 bumper and a hurdle) as she gained experience in the 2014-15 NH season. Subsequently acquired by Raymond, in the late autumn of 2015 she raced a further twice in novice hurdles where she certainly hinted at ability if not quite yet being fully competitive.
Off the course for 11 months, Raymond brought Lucarno Dancer back to
the track to run 3 times in the 2016-17 season, and carried on
through the spring of '17 where she reached the frame at Hexham in a
novice hurdle over 2 miles. Given a break during the summer, Lucarno
Dancer was prepared for an autumn campaign at Northern tracks and
this paid off with a fine handicap hurdle win at Hexham, recording a
cosy triumph under Callum Bewley beating course specialist Mrs
Grass.
She's wasn't seen at her best in her last couple of runs at Hexham
in early summer of the current season, but has had a good break
since.
'Lucy' is a tall, athletic mare standing at over 16.2hh so you'd think
we might have the option of novice handicap chases in addition to
hurdles - as mentioned above she's on a fairly attractive mark of
OR81. Anyway, we'll see how the next couple of months pan out but
it may be just around the turn of the year before she makes her
stable debut.
Tragically Lucarno Dancer was fatally injured at Sedgefield in March 2019. A really sad loss for the Shiels family.
