The family

King Kalium is owned and bred by The Potassium Partnership, the syndicate also own the dam Hannah Park.
A triple flat winner in Germany, Hannah Park was then trained by Peter Monteith to win a couple of hurdles in 2002 & 2003.
As well as Hannah Park, second dam Wassl This Then has produced another 2 winners, the sprinter De Tiger and flat winner and fair handicap hurdler Cat Five.
Wassl This Then was also a dual flat winner over 1m 2f/1m 3f.

King Kalium is the second foal out of Hannah Park, and the owners also have a couple of unraced youngsters - a  Helissio filly and a younger Midnight Legend colt.

About the sire

Kayf Tara (bay horse, born 1994) was a top-class stayer on the flat for Godolphin winning 10 of his 15 races, including 2 Ascot Gold Cups. He was suited by any type of ground.
He is a full brother the King George VI winner Opera House.
Kayf Tara is the sire of around a dozen individual flat winners but it is as a top UK based NH sire that he has made his mark at stud.
Already the sire of over 100 individual NH  winners, he looks sure to dominate the British scene for several years to come.
His top performers to date are those classy chasers Planet of Sound, Mad Max & Carruthers.

Form Summary

Potassium Partnership were a new horse racing ownership partnership to Dodlands Steading in season 2011-12. Their members were regulars at the stables each Saturday, and it has been a pleasure to train for them.
Over the past decade, the partnership have had a few horses in training, mainly over jumps. Old Nosey was a regular on the Scottish racing circuit and was an jumps winner for The Potassium Partnership.

King Kalium, owned and bred by the The Potassium Partnership, is a lovely gelding by Kayf Tara, who has had a few runs in the Spring of 2011 prior to joining the stable. But he quickly settled in, and became a popular horse with all the stable staff.

He hasn't shown much to date on the racecourse, but we thought he would benefit from a wind operation and this was carried out in the Spring of 2012.

King Kalium has shown us enough to keep him in training for 2012-13 season, and we'll be looking to start him off over staying trips in handicap hurdles, whilst keeping a close eye on his suitability for chasing.

Current Season Form
2 Mar 13 Kelso : 2m 1f novice chase (Class 4) soft 6 ran. (C Whillans (5)) - pulled up
Soon in rear, mistake first, behind from 5th, tailed off when pulled up 4 out. Bbv.
Sorry to say, King Kalium bled from the nose again and was unable to complete his race here

line

8 February 13 Newcastle : 2m hdcp hurdle (Class 5 0-95) OR 80 heavy 8 ran. (C Whillans (5)) - pulled up
Held up in touch, driven and outpaced after 3rd, no impression from next, beaten and pulled up before 3 out.
I guess this sums up the thin line there can be between success and failure in horse racing. King Kalium bled from the nose during the race and that put paid to his attempts to follow up on his win at Ayr last month.

line

3 Jan 13 Ayr : 2m 4f hdcp hurdle (Class 5 0-100) OR 73 heavy 7 ran. (C Whillans (5)) - 1st (won by 3l)
Tracked leader, led approaching 5 out, mistake but clear and going well 3 out, ridden appr 2 out, blundered last, held on well.
Great thrills for owner/breeders in the Potassium Partnership. He's had his ups and downs in the last year but King Kalium came good here. There could be more to come, possibly over fences.

line

16 Nov 12 Newcastle : 3m hdcp hurdle (Class 5 0-95) OR 73 good to soft 18 ran. (C Whillans (5)) - pulled up
Held up in mid division, mistake 2nd, headway to chase leaders 5 out, mistake 4 out, pulled up before next.
He's been going better than this at home for this to be a true run.

line

20 Oct 12 Kelso : 2m 6½f hdcp hurdle (Class 5 0-100) OR 75 oh10 ow 3 heavy 14 ran. (R Nichol (7)) - 5th (beaten 12l)
Held up in mid division, jumped well, good headway to track leader 3 out, ev ch 2 out till weakened appr last.
This was a much more promising display from our likeable gelding. Ryan, in his first ride as a conditional, give King a smashing ride, jumping and travelling well until 'blowing up' after 2 out.

line

23 May 12 Sedgefield : 2m 1f handicap hurdle (Class 5 0-95) OR 69 oh5 good to firm 14 ran. (C Whillans (7)) - 10th
Mid division, mistake 2nd and soon chasing leaders, weakened approaching 2 out.
Probably 2 miles and good to firm going put too much of an emphasis on speed. However, he's shown enough to give encouragement that he can be competitive in the right conditions.
