The family

'Goodknight Percy is the first foal out of the once-raced mare Ekhraaj, and was bought for 30,000gns at Doncaster Bloodstock Sales as a yearling.

Although Ekhraaj herself didn't show much on the racecourse, she comes from an extremely talented family. Her dam Mostaqeleh won twice as a juvenile (trained by John Dunlop) and was runner up at 3 in the Prix Sandringham (Group 2) at Chantilly. As a broodmare, she has produced a couple of black type performers abroad in Nawwaar (Abu Dhabi) and Raagheb (USA).

The third dam, the unraced Diesis mare Istiqlal, has an equally impressive record at stud, being the dame of 4 individual winners from 5 foals. The best of these has been the classy Muqbil, also trained by Dunlop, who won 3 Stakes races during his career over distances between 7 and 10 furlongs.
Ekhraaj has a 2-yr-old filly by Helmet called Helm Reef who is in training with Michael Dods, and a yearling filly by Rip Van Winkle.

About the sire

Sir Percy (bay horse, born 2003) was trained on the flat at by Marcus Tregoning and ridden in by Martin Dwyer in all his races in each of the seasons he raced from 2-4 years.
Having won the 7f Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, he was crowned Champion 2 yr old in Britain in 2005 (unbeaten), and became 2nd fav for the 2000 Guineas over the winter. As it turned out, the race went to the favourite George Washington, chased home by Sir Percy. But compensation was soon to be had, when he got up close home to win the Epsom Derby in a 4-way thrilling finish.
Sir Percy didn't trouble the judge in 4 subsequent Group1 outings at 3 and 4 and was retired to stud in 2008 to Lanwades Stud at Newmarket where his fee has remained around £7,000 give or take a grand, ever since.

Principally a flat sire, his progeny do progress well and he's sired several Group winners. It's rare for any of his jumping stock not to have started their racing career on the flat, but one exception to look out for is the good Irish bumper horse of 2016 - Presenting Percy.

Form Summary

The re-instated August sales at Doncaster - under the banner of Goffs UK (formerly DBS) - proved an attractive bait for the Potassium Partnership. With over 350 horses catalogues, the book was full of both potential and proven National Hunt sorts and we accompanied Belinda, Rory and Nick to the well laid out venue. It was an exhausting, nerve racking day as we experienced the ups and downs of bidding for a second horse for the Partnership for season 2016-17. Great fun though, and Rory had the final say on a promising gelding from Kevin Ryan's stable - the 3 yr old Goodknight Percy.

The son of Derby winner Sir Percy ran 6 times as a 2 year old, being placed 4th in 3 of these races. His best race as a juvenile was probably on his second start over 7f at  Haydock when he ran as if he would be suited by a staying trip and softer ground. Nevertheless he did record an RPR of 72, which showed that he has ability. Whilst he was not able to replicate the standard of that run, he did go on to finish 4th in a couple of more races later on that summer and seemed a bit unlucky on his last race over 10f at Bath when he held every chance inside the final furlong only to be squeezed for room.

This season on the Flat, he's had a couple of outings and again in the second of those, through no fault of his own, unseated his jockey. 'Percy' continued riderless to race prominently, and was actually the first horse past the post.

Goodknight Percy is a small-ish, chesnut gelding and we'd be looking to test his ability to jump a hurdle soon enough. A couple of seasons ago we acquired Hartforth off the flat, and this fellow reminds us a good deal of that gelding who has won 4 handicap hurdles for the stable. He'll be given time to settle into his new surroundings, and much like we did with Hartforth, we'll have a chat with his new owners and may well give 'Percy' an outing or two on the level.

Following his second run in a novice hurdle at Weherby, connections decided to retire 'Percy' and he has settled in well in his new home on a farm near the local village of Denholm.

Tracked leaders, pushed along after 5th, weakened quickly, tailed off when pulled up after 3 out, bbv.
Unfortunately 'Percy', having travelled and jumped well until halfway, broke a blood vessel and was pulled up by Callum. He's a lovely horse, but it may be that a racing career is not for him.
