The family
Bollin Julie is out of that sound, multiple winning flat performer Bollin
Nellie.
She is a full sister to Bollin Judith, who was a
useful staying flat handicapper on the flat for Tim Easterby winning 6 times
and later, a triple hurdle winner for Jim Best. A couple of younger
siblings have also been successful - winning hurdler Two B's and
multiple flat winner Multellie (including the 2016 renewal of the
Lanark Silver Bell).
And of course half sister Bollin
Fiona is a dual winning hurdler for our yard.
The grand dam Bollin Magdalene won 4 hurdle races, has bred 5 winners including
winning hurdlers Bollin Felix, Bollin Thomas & Bollin Annabel.
Multiple flat winner Bollin Derek is a close relative to Bollin Fiona being out of Bollin Magdalene,
and sharing the same sire - Silver Patriarch.
The 3rd dam Klairlone bred 12 winners from 12 runners, and all in all a
very good racing family.
About the sire
Bollin Eric (bay horse, born 1999) was bred by Sir Neil & Lady Westbrook and raced for the Westbrook family, trained by Tim Easterby. He was campaigned over 3 seasons, proving top class at 3 and 4 winning the St Leger in 2002, and York's Lonsdale Stakes (Group 3) at 4.
At stud, as a dual-purpose sire, he had a slow-ish start, but then hasn't been overwhelmed by top quality mares either.
Things are picking up with around 20 wins on the level where his best horse, incidentally, is Bollin Julie's own sister Bollin
Judith.
Better progress in the NH sphere however, with winners of over 70
races to his credit, with flagbearer being Longsdon's Grandad's
Horse
There is no doubt that Bollin Eric's progeny do progress well.
Bollin Julie is yet another of the pack of horses bred by the
Westbrook family and trained by the Easterbys (in this occasion
Tim), to be subsequently picked up at the sales by Charlie Whillans.
And Julie did indeed follow in the footsteps of our other Bollins - Ruth & Fiona
- and became a winner over hurdles for the stable at Newcastle in
March 2014.
When we brought this lovely, young filly home from the sales in
November 2010, we were prepared to give
her a lot of time to build up strength, and fill out because she was certainly backward.
Incidentally, we watched Julie via the live feed (modern
technology, eh?) from DBS - now GoffsUK - where she was led out unsold. But our old friend
Robert Robinson was on hand to complete the post-sale deal with the Easterbys.
Look no further than her full sister Bollin Judith, for evidence
that this
family does improve markedly with age. And very much like her
sister, Bollin Julie had not shown much so far in her 3 races on the
flat (running twice as a 2 yr old), over distances around a mile.
It was late on in the 2011-12 season when Julie made her hurdling debut for
us, starting at Hexham in late April. In the best of her next couple of runs,
she managed a 3rd place in a novice hurdle.
Julie then started 2013-14 with an unrealistic BHA mark of 90, but
even though it took her a few races to be competitive, she was
improving steadily. Given 3 miles and soft ground, Julie duly got off the
mark in fine style at Newcastle in March of season 2013-14.
A fine second at Carlisle aside, when ridden by Lewis 'flip'
Ferguson, season 2014-15 was relatively unremarkable, but we've brought this
9yr old mare back into the yard for forthcoming season where we know
she'll give a lot of fun and excitement to her new owners - Denholm
Park Racing.
Julie will be aimed at staying handicap hurdles, and should be competitive in soft ground.
