The family
'Jean' is the first foal out of the unraced Milan mare Pocket Call.
The grand-dam Moss Artiste ran a few times in Irish Points and is a
full sister to RSA Chase winner Cooldine and winning hurdler and
Grade 2 placed hurdler / chaser Fists of Fury.
Her best progeny has been the ill-fated listed bumper runner
Archerfield House.
From the family of multiple winning jumper Brackenfield, who was trained by Paul Nicholls to win 16 times in the 90s.
Back to recent times and both Pocket Call and Moss Artiste have young stock coming through by the late NH sire Fame and Glory.
About the sire
Getaway (bay horse, born 2003) was a tough, high class racehorse
initially trained in France by Andre Fabre, for whom he raced at 3-5
years winning several Group 2 & 3 events including Newmarket's
Jockey Club Stakes. He finished his career with Jens Hirschberger in Germany winning a couple
of Group 1s. He was best at 12f with some give in the ground.
Acquired by Coolmore, he has been based at Grange Stud in Eire from
2011 where his fee has risen from a starting €3,000 to €7,500 in 2018.
As befits a new NH sire of the Irish broodstock giant, Getaway
benefitted from large books of mares (150 plus) in his early seasons
at stud. That said, with his oldest progeny 6 yr olds of 2018, he
has proved a very promising sire with dozens of individual
winners to date under Rules.
His stock are much sought after at the sales, with bumper and point
winners regularly fetching six figures.
Getaway's best stock are Grade 2 hurdle winner Getabird and Grade 2
bumper winner Getaway Katie Mai
'Jean' was acquired by the stable at our regular recruitment stage of Tattersalls (Ireland) National Hunt August Store Sales in 2017. We were delighted when this sturdy, compact filly fell to Callum's bid on Day 1 of the sale.
Fortune was on our side, in that the filly was able to be sent straight to the yard of local handler Gary Rutherford upon returning to Scotland to be broken in. She was fairly straightforward over the next few weeks and arrived at Dodlands Steading in October '17 where she joined her new stablemates in morning exercise on the Up-the-Middle gallop. Our normal practice was followed with 'Jean' and she spent about 3 weeks in this initial spell settling into her morning routine prior to being taken out of training to strengthen and mature over the winter months.
'Jean' was brought back into training in early March, and impressed more than ourselves during this spell as she was snapped up by The Brave Lads Partnership. Of course, The Brave Lads enjoyed much success with ex Dodlands inmate Hartforth, and when that gelding was retired a ready made replacement was spotted lurking in the shadows.
Anyway, after this second spell in training for a couple of months
in the spring of '18, 'Jean' spent her summer break with half a
dozen of our racing mares out at the lush fields at Southfield. She
returned to the yard in early September, quickly adapting to morning
exercise and showing all of her early promise.
This filly would be most likely to make her debut in a bumper around
the turn of the year.
